Snowboarding Boots

There are two types of snowboarding boots. Soft boots and Hard boots.

The majority of riders will wear soft snowboarding boots. Don't get confused with the name, soft snowboarding boots aren't that soft !

Hard snowboard boots

A hard snow boot is one that is made of solid plastic and has clips all over it. Hard snowboarding boots are designed for carving and racing and not advisable for day to day freeriding and tricks, their appearance is similar to a traditional ski boot.

If you're not going to be entering racing competitions then soft snowboard boots are the boots for you!

Snowboarding Boots

Snowboarding boots are typically made from leather and canvas with rubber soles.

Snowboarding boots normally have a soft, padded, waterproof sock type thing. It is designed to keep your feet dry, warm and comfortable.
You put this on first, many of these inner boots have laces of some type so you can tighten them up. You then place your foot into the boot, and tighten that.

Buying snow boots

When buying snow boots it is important to go to a shop that stocks lots of different makes and models of snowboard boots and try them all on. I'm not kidding. Try them ALL on !

Different makes and models of snowboarding boots will all fit you differently, some will be tight in some places but too loose in others.

One of the most important things to check when trying a snowboard boot on is to check the amount of heel lift. When you find a pair of snowboarding boots that fits comfortably try this following quick test. Stand on your toes. If your boot comes with you then that's great. If your heel rises from the floor before the boot does, then this isn't so good. Heel lift is important because when you are turning on a snowboard you need your actions to transfer directly to the board to give your responsiveness and control. If there's a time lag between you shifting your weight, your heels rising, and then the boot, binding and finally the board moving then it's going to be a rough turn!

If you do find as great pair of snowboarding boots which are comfortable but have a slight heel lift, don't despair as it is possible to get pads that fit into your boot to eliminate this.

Another thing you can get for your snowboarding boots is a custom moulded insole. This will fit the contours of your feet perfectly.

It's always important to check that your snowboard boots can fit into the bindings that you have for the board. Some may be incompatible and although this is quite rare it still happens!
You can also get boots that are designed specifically for the snowboard bindings.
